The Best Cars at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
Perhaps one of the biggest auto shows every year, Geneva played host to a rally of luxury cars that will soon the flood the auto market to set off yet another competitive streak for the hottest drives in the world.
Ferrari California T.
Ferrari unveiled its latest supercar, the Ferrari California T, at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
The successor to the California features an all-new direct injection 3.9-litre V8 engine that develops 560 hp, 7,500 rpm and maximum torque of 755 Nm, allowing the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.
The engine is mounted low on the chassis in a mid-front position.
Ferrari claims that its engineers have given special attention to the flat-plane crankshaft, three piece exhaust manifold and turbo housing.
The T, much like the California, gets a retractable hard top that transforms the coupe into a spider in 14 seconds.
The California T gets a new steering box and suspension setup with new springs, coupled with the latest generation of Ferrari’s Magnaride dampers, which Ferrari says responds 50% faster.
The car also has the latest evolution of the F1-trac traction control system and CCM3 carbon-ceramic brakes that promise a 100-0 km/h stopping distance of 34 metres.
The car has been designed by Ferrari’s in-house team in association with its long-standing design house consultant Pininfarina. On the inside, the car features a new infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen along with conventional controls.
Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4.
The hottest launch of the year, the Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
There are a lot of expectations from this car considering it is the successor to the Gallardo, which for 10 years has been the Italian supercar maker’s best selling model.
So much so that if you were to line up all Lamborghinis sold since 1963, half of them will be Gallardos.
Power is sourced from the same 5.2-litre V10 engine as the Gallardo’s.
However, thanks to the IDS (Iniezione Diretta Stratifica), Lambo’s way of combining direct and indirect gasoline injections, the Huracán produces 610 hp at 8,250 rpm and 560 Nm of torque.
What this means is that the Huracán does 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, and 0-200 km/h in 9.9 seconds.
Top speed? In excess of 325 km/h.
While that is standard Lambo fare, the more significant specification of the Huracán is its dry weight.
Thanks to a new hybrid chassis integrating carbon-fiber and aluminium, the Huracán weighs a mere 1,422 kg.
Bentley Continental GT.
British carmaker Bentley has unveiled the more powerful Continental GT Speed which will be launched in June.
Bentley’s luxury supercar gets a more powerful version of the same 6-litre twin turbo W12 engine, now making 646 hp and peak torque of 820 Nm.
It is mated to an 8-speed ZF gearbox.
The new car boasts of a top speed of 331 km/h, making it the fastest production Bentley, while the revised convertible edition can hit 327 km/h.
The Bentley Continental GT Speed also gets some visual enhancements, like a front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser that are finished to match the exterior paint colour.
Red painted brake calipers and chrome ‘Speed’ badges on the front fender complete the styling changes.
The car is also available in Candy Red body shade.
2015 Audi TT.
Audi has revealed the next generation Audi TT which is powered by two engines—a 4-cylinder 2-litre turbocharged TFSI petrol engine that makes 230 hp and peak torque of 370 Nm between 1,600-4,300 rpm, and a 4-cylinder 2-litre TDI diesel engine that delivers 184 hp and peak torque of 380 Nm—both featuring the start/stop system as standard.
While the diesel variant will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission and comes in front-wheel drive, the TFSI variant gets a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive or a six-speed S tronic and quattro all-wheel drive.
In terms of exterior design, the new TT gets a revamp within the widely recognised silhouette.
The third-generation TT gets a single frame horizontal grille with a ‘V’ across the hood.
Xenon plus headlamps are standard and Audi can optionally provide LED headlights or the Audi Matrix LED technology, where high-beam is generated by controllable individual LEDs.
As for the construction, thanks to the use of high-strength and ultra high-strength steel alloys, the new TT loses around 50 kg.
On the inside, the instrument cluster and MMI unit have been combined to form a single central digital unit—the so-called Audi virtual cockpit.
The controls for the air-con are placed directly on the air vents.
Zenvo ST1.
The Zenvo ST1 made its European premiere at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
The Danish supercar, though first seen in 2008, is finally production ready with a 6.8-litre V8 supercharged and turbocharged engine which outputs 1,104 hp and 1,430 Nm of torque.
Using a 7-speed transmission, the ST1 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds while the top-speed is limited to 375 km/h.
Features in the ST1 include dual zone automatic climate control, multimedia system with GPS, cruise control, head-up display, keyless access with push button start, electrically adjustable driver and passenger racing seat and three driving mode settings.
The supercar from Denmark will compete with the supercar from Sweden, the Koenigsegg Agera.
The company announced that the car will be very exclusive as only 15 units are planned for.
Koenigsegg One:1.
Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg unveiled the One:1—a ‘Megacar,’ indicating its 1 MegaWatt power output.
Only six units of the One:1 will be manufactured and Koenigsegg has announced that they have already been spoken for.
The car uses a 5-litre all aluminium V8 engine to develop 1,341 hp and a peak torque output of 1,371 Nm at 6,000 rpm.
The car weighs a meagre 1,341 kg, giving it its name and the magical 1:1 power-to-weight ratio.
All that power goes to the wheels via a dual clutch 7-speed gearbox and an electronic differential.
The One:1 can go from 0-400 km/h in around 20 seconds and 400 km/h to 0 in half that time.
Stopping power comes from the 397 mm power-assisted ventilated ceramic disc brakes equipped with six-piston calipers at the front and 380 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the rear.
The manufacturer has also updated the rear suspension with active shock absorbers and carbon bevel springs.
Interestingly, the V8 on the One:1 can run on standard petrol, E85 biofuel and race fuel.
2015 Jaguar XF R-Sport.
The Jaguar XF R-Sport saloon is the first Jag to adopt the company’s new ‘R-Sport’ branding, and if you thought it’s powered by a petrol hungry V8 engine, you are wrong.
Power for this XF comes from the very same 4-cylinder 2.2-litre diesel engine found in JLR’s India assembled cars such as the XF 2.2 and the Freelander 2.
While the cars we see in India give an output 190 PS, the XF R-Sport is detuned to produce 163 PS at 3,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 2,000-5,000 rpm.
Using an 8-speed single-clutch automatic transmission, the R-Sport takes 10.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h, while a top-speed of 209 km/h is possible.
Visual enhancements on the R-Sport include a Sport front bumper, ‘R’ style side sills, rear spoiler, 17-inch “Ursa” alloy wheels, fitted with 17-inch low rolling resistance tyres, a Black styling pack, new 'charcoal' interior, suede cloth seats with contrast stitching and stainless steel foot pedals.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.
The Mercedes S-Class Coupe made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show to replace the CL-Class, and would be launched in the second half of 2014.
For now, the two-door car is available with a 4,663 cc V8 biturbo engine.
The S 500 Coupé has a peak power output of 455 hp and a peak torque of 700 Nm.
With a wheelbase of 2,945 mm, the coupe is 5,027 mm long, with a width of 1,899 mm and a height of 1,411 mm.
In addition to the standard LED Intelligent Light System, unique headlamps with 47 Swarovski crystals are available.
Also, 17 angular crystals form the flare-shaped daytime running lamps, with 30 round-shaped crystals making up the turn indicator lamps.
As for the two-piece tail-lights, the LEDs are arranged in two horizontal rows.
Like in the S-Class, the S 500 Coupe gets Magic Body Control system along with curve-tilting feature, where the car tilts towards the bends in a manner similar to motorcyclists or skiers, says the company.
An optional head-up display brings important information directly on the windscreen in front of the driver, presenting him with information regarding vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and driving assistance system messages.
Alfa Romeo 4C Spider.
Italian car maker Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider which will go into mass production by early 2015. The car is based on the Alfa Romeo 4C coupe and gets a few upgrades thanks to losing its roof.
It is powered by the same all-aluminium, direct-injection four-cylinder 1,750 cc turbocharged petrol engine, as in the coupe, making 240 bhp at 6,000 rpm, and peak torque of 350 Nm between 2,100 rpm and 4,000 rpm mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.
The car also gets a 4-cylinder 1,750 cc diesel engine.
The convertible has a 2-seater layout with a rear wheel drive setup and the engine being mounted in a central position. The car also debuts a new colour—The Glossy White— that is exclusive to this model.
New headlamps and optional wheels ranging from 18- to 19-inch are also part of the 4C Spider’s package.
The car has a length, Alfa Romeo says, of approximately 4 metres and a wheelbase of just under 2.4 metres.
An in-depth study was conducted to reduce air turbulence in the passenger compartment with the hood pulled down, says the company.
Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II.
Rolls-Royce has unveiled the Ghost Series II which sees a subtle redesign.
The luxury car retains the 6.6-litre turbocharged V12 engine that makes 563 bhp, delivering a 0-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph.
The engine is combined with an 8-speed automatic ZF gearbox.
At the front, the car gets resculpted LED headlamps, encircled by daytime running lights.
There’s also a tapered ‘Wake channel’ on the bonnet, emanating from the Spirit of Ecstasy statue.
The Ghost Series II also sees subtle re-sculpting of the bumpers.
On the inside, the car gets on-board Wi-Fi, satellite aided transmission that made its debut in the Rolls-Royce Wraith, updates to the navigation system, car’s user interface and an optional Bespoke audio system specifically designed for the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II.
McLaren 650S.
McLaren has unveiled its new supercar, the McLaren 650S, at the Geneva Motor Show.
The 650S would be positioned between the MP4-12C and the P1, and launches in March 2014 in the UK.
The new supercar is powered by the same M838T twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V-8 engine from the MP4-12C, except that here it produces 641 bhp at 7,250 rpm and peak torque of 678 Nm at 6,000 rpm.
Weighing just 1,330 kg, the 650S has a top speed of 333 km/h.
The car would be available as a coupe and with a retractable metal roof.
The 650S also previews McLaren’s new design language that features a front bumper sitting under LED headlamps, featuring an integrated front splitter.
The splitter is met by door blades that direct air from its trailing edges.
The new car gets the same drag co-efficient as the MP4-12C, with an increase in down-force by 24% at 150 mph.
The compact mid-mounted engine is cooled by radiators that are fed by the large air intakes behind the car’s dihedral doors.
The five-spoke aluminium alloy wheels have been fitted with Pirelli P Zero race tyres.
This car also gets McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control suspension system.
